About Me

Dan Walsh

I'm a web designer/front-end developer, husband and father living in sunny Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.

I've been working in web design and development for the past 15 years and I'm currently working as a senior web designer at Enovate Design, in Chelmsford, Essex. In my previous roles I worked at the City of London Corporation, Your Communications and Netforce.

My professional skills lie in user interface design and front-end web development so the majority of my time is spent designing attractive websites and coding them into page templates for use in content management systems.

When I'm not in the office I enjoy listening to vinyl or cycling on my road bikes. I’m a fanatical recycler and have fun dreaming up projects where I get to use my collection of film and digital cameras.

About The Site

About The Site

As a web designer I think it's important for me to have my own website. Not only does it allow me to have my projects, portfolio and contact details all in one place it also means I can mess around with new technologies and break things without anyone getting too upset.

Seeing as I like a challenge I set myself some pretty strict ground-rules when it came to building this website:

  • Design should convey personality, not the latest trends
  • Code with valid HTML5
  • Use ARIA landmark roles
  • Use CSS for all layout and styling
  • Use CSS3 but don't go OTT
  • Incidental images must be my own
  • Use @font-face kits for all typography
  • Don't use giant repeating background images
  • Use a sprite file for images where practical
  • Use responsive design techniques for mobile devices
  • Use SVG wherever possible
  • Avoid <div> soup at all costs
  • No gradients. Ever. Not one.

I think I've been successful in sticking to these rules and I've certainly learnt a lot along the way that I've been able to use in my day-to-day work. I believe that's what they call a win win situtaion.

That's the background bit now for the boring stuff...

Typography

The text is set in Bebas Neue by Dharma Type for the logo, Ostrich Sans by Tyler Finck for the navigation tabs, logo sub-heading, page headings and sub-headings and Afta Serif by Oriol Esparraguera for page content.

I'm forever grateful to the folks over at Font Squirrel for providing these free fonts and the @font-face kits I'm using to display them.
